Hello, my name is Kimberli MacKay and I’d like to welcome you to Introduction to Fashion: Research, Culture, and Commerce.   I’ve had a diverse career in the fashion industry and am excited to help you begin yours.

Over the last 25 years, I’ve worked as Director of Design for a leading woman’s accessories company wherein I traveled the world managing the product development and production of my designs in factories throughout Asia, Europe, and the United States.  As a couturier, creating custom garments for television stars and private clients, suiting their needs and special requests.  I’ve helped entrepreneurs by creating their first samples and tech packs, as well as guiding them through production, and even spent a few years in the home sewing industry as a product and sewing expert for a leading sewing machine manufacturer.  It’s been an exciting and challenging journey so far and I can’t wait to see what’s next!

This website presents my latest course, Introduction to Fashion: Research, Culture, and Commerce.  Together we will explore the intricacies of the fashion world, presenting you with the building blocks for a solid base of knowledge.  We will begin with a view through history, learning how to utilize it in our inspiration.  Discover how trends influence the market, including social influences and the roles of culture and celebrity.  You will practice proper research techniques, preparing you for your future as designers.  The cycle of production will be explained and reviewed as well as learning industry jargon, and some insight into building your brand.

Click through to the Course Introduction page for more information.

All my best,

Kimberli
